Leigh, I think as soon as we take out effort to the "airwaves", we are a model, good or bad. And I totally agree with your last paragraph. It can't be but good, whatever the outcome.

Sherry, I wish so too! :)

Well, I'm one who does agree with you. We are preparing in a somewhat different manner, but we do see the need and urgency to prepare nonetheless. We've never had much money, never officially had the income to be part of the middle class, so in some ways I feel fortunate; we've already learned to do without the things that create the "normal" middle class lifestyle.

DH and I use the old-fashioned term "self sufficiency" but really, we are working on being able to survive in the event of the collapse of our culture as we know it. I often ask myself, "how would we substitute for this," or "what would we do without that."

I never used to think about being a model for others, but you're correct about how important that is.

Some think our outlook is pessimistic, but I think it's realistic. And if I'm wrong and the world and the economy solve all it's problems and spring forth abundant, I've lost nothing. In fact, I've gained the satisfaction of developing self awareness and self discipline, of being productive by the work of my own hands, and by enjoying a sense of purpose in what I do and how I do it. I wouldn't trade that for anything.
